That might sound like a hardcore, hair shirt sort of life, but realistically, except for some corner case recordings, you can get a lot done with streaming. Target Usage ScenarioĪgain, I think the target setup here with the T3 is for the kind of person who just wants to stream music. Then the T3 just functions as a streamer/DAC and plugs into a preamp if you want to use multiple sources. It’s also possible to set up the T3 so that it completely bypasses the digital volume control. The T3 brings in those streams, sends them into a DAC, produces an analog signal, and also provides a special digital volume control that could be used to adjust the amount of volume that you get out of your power amps. I used Tidal and Qobuz, but you can use a variety of streaming services with the T3. That said, the T3 seems to be built around streaming and that’s how I tested it. So, there are effectively two very specific inputs. You can also connect certain hard drives or USB drives with downloaded music. You might prefer the convenience of wireless Wi-Fi, but I suspect Lumin feels that the data glitches possible in Wi-Fi are deleterious to audio quality. ![]() In the case of the Lumin T3, we have a single box that can be plugged into your network, via an ethernet cable. This, of course, affects value calculations. It can be hard to understand what you are getting and what you are not, and thus what other equipment you need or don’t need. ![]() It is valuable, I think, to spell out the functions in the box, and how it would fit into your system, because there are many permutations and combinations of subsystems in equipment today. The T3 is interesting because, at $5000 it is half the price of the P1, yet retains its unusual LEEDH lossless digital volume control. We have previously reviewed the Lumin P1 ( ), which is a more feature-rich streamer/DAC/preamp. ![]() It was recently introduced by Pixel Magic Systems. The Lumin T3 is an interesting streamer/DAC with a lossless volume control.
